Colour of the month Sand - July 2018

The more sand has escaped from the hourglass of our life, the clearer we should see through it.
— Niccolo Machiavelli

Colour of the month for July: Sand

Sand is a neutral colour that I have developed a strong resistance to over the years. With all the Scandi trends and neutral palettes now saturating the market, my natural reaction would be to run in the opposite direction. However, more recently I have become quite captivated by the rich colour of sand, not least because it has true warmth, and its soothing tone reminds me of escaping to a remote beach. I just love sand married with bright colours or soft pastel shades, creating depth and a richness, giving a refined, sophisticated look for your home.

Bring a warm and inviting feeling into your home by combining modern craftsmanship with traditional pieces. In your sitting room, try using bamboo fans to create a lampshade hanging from the ceiling, and jacquard woven cotton and linen curtains in abstract patterns, mimicking the currents of a wave leaving its mark on a sand bed. Burnt-out flower prints on plush velvet in shades of deep sand can be used for upholstery fabric on sofas and side chairs, along with muted silk paisley print cushions in shades of light sand. Spatterings of hand blown glass vases sit nicely on side tables. Try circular mirrors with a burst of sun-ray trim in light bamboo, and walls adorned with novelty wallpapers like flying birds, tree branches, and bold modern abstract tonal repeat patterns.

Natural linen pillow cases and bedsheets create a calm feel to a bedroom, alongside oversize abstract patterned coarse cotton jacquard rugs in varying shades of sand, placed on sun-bleached, untreated wooden floors.

Sand shades work well in the kitchen, with an oversize sun bleached dining table and a big organic straw chandelier. Ceramic plates, bowls and mugs in combined shades of sand and off-white with simple swirl patterns or prints. Opt for distressed marble tiled bathroom tiles, or exposed natural brick surfaces with a modern his and hers sink, and a large rococo gold gilded mirror.

Why not revisit the shades of sand as a great colour option for your home?
