Colour of the month Navy Blue - October 2018

Navy blue was my school uniform colour. I actually quite like it – I thought it was an elegant colour, especially the striped navy and sky-blue tie we all had to wear. It also compared favourably to the uniforms of nearby schools, whose kids wore uniforms in a sad grey colour, or green.

Navy blue has always been a very powerful colour, so I'm not surprised that it represents truth, integrity and sincerity.

Various shades of navy blue can add a dramatic alternate colour to your home; strong and clean when used for contrast against white, or pairing well with silver or gold accents.

Try a living room with dark matte navy painted on walls, or opt for beautifully flocked paisley wallpaper. Bold chevron patterned Makalu wallpaper by Harlequin will give a certain intrigue to the space. Embellished deep navy velvet cushions with silver accents add richness to a high back sofa. A vintage sideboard cabinet in vibrant navy blue, with hand-blown glass chandeliers creates a classic yet modern feel to the room.

Have your kitchen floor tiled with an intricate mosaic pattern, creating an inviting nostalgic feel to the room. Clean pristine dark navy kitchen cabinets work beautifully when offset with white tiles walls. A handmade drum lampshade covered with a copper lining hangs over the dining table.  Complete the picture with ornate blue and white dinner plates, deep navy blue bowls, hand-blown glass wine glasses and cotton printed napkins. For a final finishing touch adorn the wall with the Frank Stella abstract painting -"Hampton Roads "-1961

Offset the warm and inviting feel to a bedroom created by exposed wooden flooring with solid navy painted walls, and use Graf pendant light features with beautiful inky navy flowers around the rim hanging over the bed. Add a Jacquard woven abstract duvet cover and solid pillow cover. Finish with lightweight, almost sheer cotton curtains, with a single flower motif to bring a gentle lightness into the room.
